About Traditional Art

Traditional Art was born from a deep respect for Romanian heritage and a belief that tradition should not be left behind, but carried forward.

We create handmade textile pieces and traditional Romanian masks, made with care, patience, and a strong connection to the craft. From 100% wool rugs, runners, cushion covers, woven bags, and decorative articles to expressive handmade masks inspired by Romanian winter customs, every piece is created to bring something meaningful into the home.

For us, these are not just objects. They are pieces of memory, culture, and identity.

A story woven through generations

Behind Traditional Art are Maria and Iulian Mihalachi, two artisans whose work grew from family heritage, creativity, resilience, and love for Romanian tradition.

Maria grew up surrounded by woven textiles. Her mother made traditional rugs and runners, while her father traveled across the country to sell woven pieces. The rhythm of the loom, the beauty of wool, and the language of traditional motifs were part of her life long before they became part of a brand.

Years later, during a difficult period in their lives, Maria and Iulian faced challenges in another business they were running. In that moment, Maria returned to weaving, first as a way to create something useful and help rebuild stability. What started from necessity slowly became something much greater.

Her work began to be noticed. Museums, exhibitions, traditional markets, collectors, and people who valued authentic craftsmanship started paying attention. With time, the pieces became more than products. They became a recognizable expression of Romanian textile art.

Today, Maria creates her own sketches and designs for each woven piece, blending traditional inspiration with her personal artistic vision. Iulian creates traditional Romanian masks by hand, each one full of character, symbolism, and individuality. Together, they have shaped Traditional Art into a family brand built on craft, culture, and legacy.

From Romanian tradition to contemporary homes

Traditional Romanian textiles were never only decorative. They warmed the home, protected interiors, marked family care, and carried symbolic motifs from one generation to the next.

Traditional Art continues this language today, creating pieces that feel rooted in heritage while belonging naturally in contemporary homes. Many of the motifs found in traditional weaving carry old meanings, from geometric rhythms and solar symbols to the tree of life, a motif often associated with balance, continuity, and harmony.

Maria’s work is inspired by this visual heritage, but it is never simply copied. Each design begins with her own sketches and compositions, shaped by her eye for color, proportion, and meaning.

Preserving tradition through lasting pieces

Our mission is to preserve Romanian traditions while creating high-quality handmade products that can be used, displayed, and cherished for years.

Our woven textiles are made from 100% wool, chosen for its natural beauty, durability, warmth, and timeless character. Each rug, runner, cushion cover, bag, or decorative textile is made with attention to detail and respect for the traditional techniques that inspired it.

Our masks are also handmade with the same care. They are created using materials such as natural sheep fur, textile details, and wooden or bone teeth, keeping alive the expressive and theatrical spirit of Romanian folk customs.

Every piece carries the hand of the artisan. Small variations in texture, color, shape, or detail are not imperfections. They are signs of human work, individuality, and authenticity.

What makes our work different

Traditional Art pieces are not mass-produced. They are designed and made by Maria and Iulian Mihalachi, which means many of them cannot be found anywhere else.

Maria creates her own designs, often inspired by traditional Romanian and Moldavian motifs, but interpreted through her own artistic eye. Iulian’s masks are equally distinctive, each one shaped by hand and full of personality. Some creations are one of a kind, made as singular pieces of art.

Beyond their design, every product is made with care for quality, durability, and meaning. We believe that handmade work should be beautiful, but it should also last. It should bring warmth into a home, tell a story, and keep a part of tradition alive.

Recognized craftsmanship

With over two decades of experience, Maria and Iulian Mihalachi have become part of Romania's living craft heritage, preserving traditional weaving and mask-making through generations of dedication and artistry.

Over the years, their work has been presented in museums, exhibitions, traditional markets, and cultural events across the country. They have participated in events organized by some of Romania's leading cultural institutions, including the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest, the National Museum of Bucovina – Bucovina Village Museum in Suceava, the Palace of Culture in Iași, the ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization in Sibiu, the Țării Crișurilor Museum in Oradea, the National Museum Complex Neamț, and numerous other museums and organizations dedicated to preserving Romania's cultural heritage.

In 2021, their work was showcased in "Scoarțe (Traditional Romanian Rugs)," an exhibition dedicated to Maria and Iulian Mihalachi at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest. They continue to return regularly to the museum for its traditional artisan fairs, while also participating in museum fairs and cultural festivals throughout Romania.

Throughout the years, Maria and Iulian have received numerous diplomas and distinctions recognizing both their participation in national folk art events and their contribution to preserving, promoting, and passing on authentic Romanian craftsmanship. Their continued presence at these cultural gatherings reflects not only the quality of their work but also their active role in keeping traditional Romanian artistry alive.

Their craftsmanship has also been featured beyond museums. Maria's woven textiles have been highlighted by Romanian home and design publications, including Adela Pârvu, and were mentioned in The New York Times travel feature Romania Rugs Road Trip (2018), which celebrated Romania's rich weaving traditions and the artisans preserving them.

For Maria and Iulian, these recognitions are a great honor. Yet their greatest achievement remains the same as it has always been: creating meaningful pieces that preserve Romanian traditions and allow them to be appreciated by future generations.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE BRAND

Maria has always had a creative vision. Before dedicating herself fully to traditional textile art, she studied textiles in Iași and began her career as a teacher. Her eye for composition, color, and form can be seen in every piece she creates.

Iulian also came from a strong professional background before entering entrepreneurship and later dedicating himself to traditional mask-making. His work brings another side of Romanian tradition into the brand, one that is bold, symbolic, expressive, and deeply connected to folk rituals.

Together, Maria and Iulian have built more than a workshop. They have built a living continuation of Romanian craft.
